Gangneung High School’s 193-centimeter Lee Dae-hyun led the team to the quarterfinals of the 77th Golden Lion National High School Baseball Tournament with his performance as both pitcher and hitter.
Gangneung High defeated Yulgok High 2-1 in the round of 16 at Mokdong Baseball Stadium in Seoul on May 22. After advancing to the quarterfinals, Gangneung will play Seongnam High School at 2 p.m. on May 24 at Mokdong Stadium.
On the day, Gangneungo sent up starting pitcher Cheon Bum-seok to start the game. After three innings of three-hit, three-strikeout ball, Gangneung scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning on a groundout by Park Chae-woon with runners on first and third.
Chun Bum-seok was followed by Park Ji-hoon, who pitched from the fourth inning and gave up one run on four hits with two strikeouts in 3.1 innings. With one out in the top of the seventh inning, Park Ji-hoon doubled off Kim Jun-hwan, prompting the Gangneung High bench to send their “ace,” Cho Dae-hyun, to the mound.
Cho got Park Jun-beom to ground out to shortstop, but gave up an infield single to Lee Ji-yoon with two outs to tie the game at 1-1.
After holding the Yulgok offense scoreless, Gangneungo scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth. In the bottom of the eighth, Gangneung put runners on first and second with a single by Lee Chan-seo and a walk by Cho Dae-hyun. The next batter, Lee Yul-ye, followed with a single to left field to score the winning run.
With a 2-1 lead in the top of the ninth, Cho Dae-hyun took the mound and got a clean triple play to preserve the one-run lead and earn the win. On the day, Cho pitched 2.2 innings, striking out 22 and walking none. At the plate, where he batted in the No. 4 spot, Cho also helped the team’s offense by going 1-for-3 with a walk and a hit.
Speaking to the media after the Game 16 victory, Cho said, “It was a close game, but I’m glad my team won. I wasn’t 100%, but I focused on my mid-game pitching and prepared, and I got a good result. In this tournament, I tried to focus on my pitching, so I felt like I left too many batters on base (laughs). But I tried to focus on both the mound and the plate today. I’ve been seeing a lot of pitches, so I feel like I’m getting a little bit of a feel for hitting.”
Dae-hyun Cho, who is known as “Idoryu,” is still more recognized as “Pitcher Dae-hyun Cho” in rookie designations. The player himself expressed that he wants to show more charm as a pitcher in order to enter the professional stage.
He said, “I think my strengths are more as a pitcher, so I hope to be noticed more as a pitcher in the future. If I go to the professional stage and they ask me to be a hitter, I will try my best, but if they ask me to choose one, I am more attached to being a pitcher. It’s not easy to take a deep breath when I’m on the mound after batting, but I think I’ll be fine as I throw,” he said.
Dae-hyun Cho has an official game-high fastball of 151 km/h this year. Cho, who cites schoolmate Choi Ji-min (KIA Tigers) as his role model as a pitcher, said he’s trying to keep his mind off the recent surge in top three ratings. The Lotte Giants have recently been touting Cho as their third potential first-round pick, following the top two picks of Jang Hyun-seok (Masan Yongmago) and Hwang Jun-seo (Jang Chung-go).
“I would say Choi Ji-min, my senior at school, is my role model as a pitcher, but I don’t really have a role model as a hitter. I didn’t live with Choi Ji-min at school, but I remember having a few conversations with her when she came to train for about a month when I transferred to the school. I try not to think too much about the rookie batting order. I just focus on doing my job on the mound, and I believe that good draft results will follow,” he said, biting his lip.
Dae-hyun Cho remembers swallowing the disappointment of losing to Deoksu High School in the final of the E-Mart Bae National High School Baseball Tournament in mid-April. At that time, he was unable to take the mound in the final due to the pitch count limit, but he was determined to be on the mound in the final of the Hwangsagi tournament. 메이저놀이터
“I was very disappointed to be the runner-up in the E-Mart Bae,” he said, “but now I feel like I can manage the game because I can relax a little bit on the mound, whereas in the E-Mart Bae I was trying to use my strength on the mound. My biggest goal in the Hwangsagi tournament is to manage my pitch count well and unconditionally go up to the final mound and throw the ball.
