Choi Ji-Man (32, San Diego Padres), the eldest member of the Korean Major League Baseball family, has returned to the major leagues.
The Padres announced today (Aug. 16) that they have “activated Matt Carpenter from the disabled list (IL) and recalled Ji-Man Choi from the IL.”스포츠토토
Choi was placed on the 10-day DL on August 15 with a left rib strain. Choi began a rehab assignment at Triple-A on Aug. 6, and in his first game, he went 2-for-3 with a double, a walk, and three strikeouts. However, he suffered a setback during the game when he was hit in the foot by a pitch and suffered a bruise.
Since returning to action on Sept. 9, Choi has batted .160 (4-for-25) with one home run, four RBIs and seven strikeouts in seven games at Triple-A. San Diego called up Choi to the big leagues as an alternative to Carpenter, a left-handed hitter who can play designated hitter and first base.
Choi, a prospective free agent, has had a rough go of it this season. He missed most of the first half of the season with an Achilles injury, and even after being traded to San Diego, he has been hampered by injuries, appearing in just 30 games. With the Pittsburgh Pirates, he was stymied by the platoon system when he was hitting well.
Choi is batting just .179 (15-for-84) with six home runs, 11 RBIs, and a .679 OPS this season. He has yet to record his first hit (0-for-11) in seven games since being acquired by San Diego in a trade on Aug. 2. It will be interesting to see if Choi, who is having a tough time, can find his stride in the upcoming 2023 season.
