The unfortunate No. 1 player Choi Min-ju (25, 175 cm) has left the court.
The Bucheon Hana OneQ announced the news of Choi’s retirement on its official social media on March 31.
Choi is a mixed-race player born to a Swiss father and Korean mother. She started playing basketball late in her junior year of middle school, but quickly became the ace of Sookmyung Girls High School. In 2017, she led her team to the federation championship.
Based on her performance, she was drafted by KEB Hana Bank as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2017-2018 WKBL Draft. With his athleticism and explosive scoring ability, he was expected to be a great addition to KEB Hana Bank’s forward line.
However, the barriers to professionalism were high. Choi struggled to make an impact during the team’s name change to Hana Bank and Hana OneQ. Frequent injuries also hindered him. By last season, he had averaged just 3 minutes and 22 seconds of playing time in 22 games, with a meager 1.1 points and 0.5 rebounds.
Eventually, after the end of last season, Choi announced his retirement to the coaching staff and players early on. Hana OneQ tried to clear the way for him through waivers, but he chose to retire from active duty.
A Hana OneQ official said, “I have been telling the coaching staff and players since last season that I want to retire. I think he was tired of not being able to play and being constantly injured. We thought about releasing him on waivers, but he said he wanted to stop playing basketball, so we announced his retirement.” 스포츠토토
