‘Key to Arteta’s tactics’ Zinchenko congratulates Man City on win…’Arsenal fans furious’

Oleksandr Zinchenko, who played for Manchester City until last season, has drawn the ire of some Arsenal fans after posting a message congratulating City on their title.

Manchester City have clinched the club’s long-awaited UEFA Champions League title. City defeated Inter Milan 1-0 on penalties in the 2022-23 UEFA Champions League (UCL) final at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul, Turkey, on Sunday (Nov. 11). The victory marked the first time in the club’s history that City won the UCL and completed the triple (league, FA Cup, and UCL).

City’s historic first UCL title. In addition, City became only the second English club in history to complete the treble, after Manchester United did so in the 1998-99 season.

Accolades and congratulations have been pouring in. Jinchenko is one of them. Zinchenko congratulated City on their first UCL title, posting a photo of the victory and a clapping emoji.

But Arsenal fans were furious. The reasoning was that he was congratulating City on their treble when the Gunners were just behind them in the league title race this season. “Arsenal fans were outraged when Zinchenko congratulated his hometown team, City, on their title win,” The Sun reported.

Jinchenko played for City before joining Arsenal this season. Since joining City in 2016, he has played in a variety of positions, both on the flanks and in the center, as required by Pep Guardiola.

Since moving to Arsenal this season, he has been a key part of Mikel Arteta’s tactics. His natural position is left fullback, but he can also drop inside like an inverted fullback to participate in the buildup, as well as cut in sharp passes from half-space. He doesn’t just play on the left either. It’s not uncommon to see Zinchenko pick up the ball in space on the right and either play it into the box or attempt a mid-range shot with his left foot.

There are a number of reasons why Zinchenko is able to make these plays. First and foremost, Zinchenko has developed his passing skills by playing multiple roles since his time at City, and secondly, he can play in a midfield position because he plays as a midfielder for the Ukrainian national team. This is why Zinchenko can play the way Arteta wants him to play, without panicking if he gets the ball in the center or in front of the box instead of in the flanking spaces.
