Club professional Michael Block (USA), a “surprise star” after his tie for 15th at the PGA Championship, will be the guest of honor at the Charles Schwab Challenge on the U.S. Professional Golf (PGA) Tour ($8.7 million purse).
The tournament will be held at Colonial Country Club (Par 70) in Fort Worth, Texas, USA, over four days, starting late on Friday night.
While the likes of World No. 1 Scottie Shaffler and defending champion Sam Burns (USA) are expected to be in contention for the title, it’s the Club Pro-Block that’s garnering more attention.
Block, who recently broke out with a tie for 15th at the PGA Championship, is on the 120-man field as a sponsor invitee.
He reportedly canceled his lesson schedule to play in the tournament.
Despite the buzz, world number one Schauffler is the favorite to win the tournament.
Schauffler’s runner-up finish at the PGA Championship gave him 42 days to regain the No. 1 ranking.
Schauffler is eager for revenge after falling short in a playoff to his close friend Burns at this event last year.
Burns will be defending her title for only the second time in the event’s history.
Only Ben Hogan (USA) has ever won back-to-back titles (1946-1947, 1952-1953) in the event, which began in 1946.
Jordan Spieth (USA) will also be a strong favorite, with one win (2016) and three runner-up finishes in the last decade.
Korean players will also be in the hunt for their first title.
Lim Sung-jae, who finished 10th in the 2020 edition and 15th last year, will be joined by Kim Si-woo, Lee Kyung-hoon, Kim Sung-hyun and Ahn Byung-hoon.
Meanwhile, the LIV Golf Series, sponsored by Saudi Arabia, will kick off its seventh edition ($25 million in prize money) at Trump National Golf Club (Par 72) in Sturgeon, Virginia, USA, on June 26.
Brooks Koepka (USA), who became the first LIV player to win a major championship, the PGA Championship, will be looking for his second win of the season 먹튀검증.
