Ryu shifts gears in the third inning…90 mph pitching + pinpoint stuff saved the day

He’s warmed up. After struggling in the first two innings of his comeback, Ryu Hyun-jin, 35, shifted gears.

Ryu Hyun-jin made his first big league start since suffering an elbow injury in a home game against the Baltimore Orioles of Major League 안전놀이터 Baseball (MLB) at Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, on Tuesday (June 2). Allowed three runs on three hits in the first and second innings. His four-seam fastball didn’t even touch 90 mph (144.8 km/h). The third inning was a different story.

Ryu struggled against Baltimore’s young hitters, who are currently the hottest in MLB. He gave up a leadoff double to Adley Rutchman and back-to-back doubles to Ryan Mountcastle to start the inning. He then gave up another hit to No. 3 hitter Anthony Santander and a grounder to Gunner Henderson that allowed Mountcastle to score from third.

Ryu led off the second inning with a double to left by Ramon Urias. After a sacrifice bunt advanced the runner to third, Jorge Mateo induced a grounder to third to load the bases and get the out, but was hit by a rushman for the second time in the game. The ball didn’t have much velocity, but it sailed between the shortstop and second baseman.

In the second inning, Ryu’s fastball was not touching 90 mph. But in the third inning, with the score 2-3 and the Tigers rallying for two runs, Ryu showed a different side of his game than in the first and second innings. He threw his highest velocity of the game (91 mph-146.5 km/h) to the leadoff hitter, Santander. A low curveball was caught and allowed a hit, but he induced a 4(2B)-6(SS)-3(1B) double play to Austin Hays to get out of the jam. Two batters later, Henderson hit 90 mph on pitches two and four. On a 1-ball-2-strike count, he lined a fastball down the line in left field for the second out of the inning.

Toronto tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the third on a solo home run by Brandon Belt. Ryu’s comeback is just beginning.
